Nobuye Sakahara passed away peacefully on May 9, 2017 in Stockton, California. She celebrated her 96th birthday on April 25. Nobuye is survived by her husband of 72 years, Bill Sakahara; her daughter, Glyneth Sakahara (John McKay); daughter-in-law, Teresa Sakahara; son-in-law, Bill Kohler; grandchildren Anne Taylor (John Taylor) and Casey Eklund; and great grandson, Miles Taylor. Nobuye is survived by a younger brother, Tom Daijogo (Barbara) and numerous nieces and nephews. Nobuye is predeceased by her son, Steven Sakahara and her daughter, Jeanne Kohler; parents, Ichiro and Shiye Daijogo; and siblings Kazuto Daijogo, Tsutaye Tanaka, Yoshiye Kamei, and James Daijogo. Nobuye grew up in Placer County and graduated from Placer Union High School in 1940. She met and married the love of her life, Bill Shizuto Sakahara at Tule Lake Internment Camp in 1945. In 1946 they moved to Lodi where they raised their children, Glyneth, Steven, and Jeanne and where they continued to reside.
Nobuye found enjoyment as a homemaker along with a brief career as a beautician. She had a great love of her garden and she would most often be found tending to her flowers. Anne and Casey remember spending many childhood weekends with their grandparents, fishing at Lake Camanche, tending to the koi in their backyard and eating Nobuye’s apple pies for which she was well-known.
The family appreciates the attention Nobuye received from caregiver Alma Ancheta and the staff at Abbey Covey Care Home during her last months of life. Nobuye will be remembered for her kindness to others and her friendly smile.
A special thank you to Vitas Hospice for their kind and gentle care.
At her request, there will be no services and internment will be at Cherokee Memorial Park.
