January 12, 1922 - June 8, 2023
On June 8, 2023 Steve Facaros, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and teacher, passed away peacefully at the age of 101 surrounded by his loving family.
Steve is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 72 years, Mary Facaros, his two children Nick (Susan) and Despina “Denise” (Mel) Facaros, his three beloved grandchildren, Michael (Alexa) Rocha, Stephen Facaros and Andreana (Brendan) Campbell and his precious great grandchildren August Campbell and Violet Rocha who always put a smile on his face. He is also survived by his sister Toula Kavalingos in Ikaria Greece and brother George Facaros in Oregon. He was predeceased by his siblings Maria, Lemonia, Sophia, Anna and Pete. Steve is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Steve was born in Youngstown, Ohio on January 12, 1922, to Nikolaos Facaros and Despina (Lakios) Facaros only a few years after his mom and dad immigrated to the U.S. During the depression they made the decision to move back to Ikaria, Greece only to find things in a similar difficult economic condition. His dad made the decision to return to Ohio to make money for the family. Just prior to World War II, Steve, the oldest of eight, was sent to help his dad work at the Colombia Lunch restaurant in Ohio leaving his mom and siblings behind. In the years that followed, the family was greatly impacted by the war and escaped to the Belgian Congo through Turkey. Eventually the family was reunited in the United States.
Education was paramount to Steve and he was accepted to The Ohio State University to pursue a degree in Political Science. Unfortunately, he was drafted into the US Air Force and served his 4 years, stalling his education. At the conclusion of the war, he resumed his education and ultimately received his degree.
At an AHEPA dance in 1950 he met the love of his life, Maria “Mary” Madias. They had a whirlwind romance and married two months later in Steubenville Ohio.
Steve and Mary started life in Ohio while Steve worked at Cooper Bessemer as an engineer. After Nick and Denise were born they visited family in Lodi, CA and decided the warm climate reminding them of Greece was where they wanted to be. They packed up with very little money and drove to California to live with relatives until Steve could secure a job. He decided to get his teaching credential while working and finally began his true labor of love, teaching others. He taught History at Fremont Junior high school and Greek language courses at Delta College. He never stopped teaching others every chance he got.
Steve was a man of few words but had a wicked dry sense of humor with tremendous wit. He was vibrant and generous. He loved fishing and gardening, and was skilled at growing fruits and vegetables. He enjoyed history, politics, nature, and travel. He and Mary spent many years traveling the world including summers in Greece while taking students on tours to share his love of Greek culture. Steve was the patriarch of his family and, as the oldest brother, was a role model to his siblings and family exemplifying the importance of hard work and encouragement of higher education. However, his most joy came from being a caring Papou. Nothing made Steve happier than sharing stories of his life with his grandchildren and making them laugh.
Steve was an active member of the Order of AHEPA and the Northern California Pan Icarian Brotherhood for over 70 years. He was a member of St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church since 1958 and was a constant staple at the annual Greek Food Festival.
Steve lived life to the fullest and truly was one of a kind. He will be deeply missed.
