She is known as “Mari or Mary” but those who are closest to her know her as “Aunty.” She was born into the Sa-Kalolo family in the village of Vaitogi, American Samoa to parents Sa “Lupe” Kalolo (mother) & Vaiaga Tifi Fausaga (stepfather).
EDUCATION: Alumna of Leone High School class of 1978, attended American Samoa Community College from 1980-1982, she graduated with an Associate’s of Arts degree in Business Administration from Southern California Institute of Technology in 2009. She attempted her bachelor’s degree at the same college while simultaneously acted as primary caretaker for her elderly mother at the time. A year into her bachelor’s degree, she made a selfless decision to place her educational pursuits on hold so she could care for her mother.
She worked for American Samoa’s Department of Public Works Water Utility department for 11+ years which later merged with American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) in 1988. She also worked as a financial representative for American Wireless Company in the bay area for approximately 10 years.

Family, faith, education and freedom to express oneself. Mariana was a family-oriented individual & loved spending time with her loved ones. She loved celebrating her family’s accomplishments & major milestones. She always wanted the best for all of her nephews & nieces. She had unwavering faith that kept her spirit thriving & resilient throughout her life. She always emphasized the importance of education and not only encouraged but often supported her nieces & nephews in their educational pursuits.
Prior to her diagnosis, Mariana loved to cook and experiment with new recipes. She had an unbelievably green thumb and can grow anything. Her favorite color was purple & teal. Most of the talents/skills she had were self-taught. She loved butterflies because of how graceful they roamed the earth. She has read the entire Samoan bible from beginning to end. She could type 65 words per minute. She memorized all of her siblings & their children’s birthdates. She enjoyed reading and always loved the company of her family.
Mariana courageously battled ovarian cancer for a year and passed away on October 4th 2020 surrounded by her nieces & nephews. She will be remembered as a caring sister, devoted daughter, a loving aunt and notably – a fearless warrior who battled cancer until the very end. Rest peacefully dearest angel. We love you.
