June 15, 1935 - November 5, 2024
John Edward Wheeler, aged 89, of Stockton, CA, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024. Born on June 15, 1935, John’s early years were marked by his exceptional athleticism and leadership. He shone as the star quarterback at Franklin High School and later brought his skills to the Army, where he served honorably from 1953 to 1956. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, John played a pivotal role as quarterback, leading the Army team to a celebrated victory against the Navy.
John’s competitive spirit extended beyond high school and his military service. He continued to engage in sports, playing football, softball, and basketball for many years. His love for sports was only matched by his passion for golf, a game he cherished throughout his adult life.
Professionally, John dedicated 27 years to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA, until his retirement in 1990. Even after retirement, John remained active, coaching his grandchildren in baseball, dancing with his wife, and occasionally watching an old western, and notably, playing golf whenever possible.
John leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Beverly Wheeler, and his daughters, Stacey Mayoya and Julie Adams (Steve). He was a proud grandfather to Jonathon Adams (Jen), Justin Adams, Zachary Mayoya, Kristopher Hawkins, and Kelsi Hawkins, and adored his seven great- grandchildren. His family remembers him as a pillar of strength, honor, love and joy.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Hawkins; brothers Jake Wheeler, Larkin Wheeler, and Marcus Wheeler; and his sisters Rochelle Webb, and Georgia Brooks.
John’s life was a testament to his vigor, discipline, and the love he had for his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and were impacted by his endearing spirit and zest for life.
