Johannes Petrus Smit

SmitIt is with a heavy heart that we said good-bye to our wonderful husband, brother, father, and grandfather Johannes Petrus Smit on the evening of April 8, 2015. He spent 85 beautiful years on this earth with his family and friends.John was born on January 23, 1930, a cold blustery day in the Beemster, Netherlands. His family lived on a 5-hectare dairy farm where he learned how to work with cows and agriculture alongside his brothers, Pete, Nico, Paul and Laus. In the winters, he ice skated with his sisters Riet, Sjaan and Alida to school on the canals and in the summers he biked and played soccer with his friends after work. He also competed in couples ice skating competition with his sister Alida. At 17, he won a race across a muddy field to win a bicycle of his dreams. In his adult life, John played soccer in a men’s group and took up golf in his later years. In January 2015, he won his last golf tournament. John was only nine when World War II began and his family was part of the Dutch underground movement. They hid soldiers under the parlor floor, capture goods in the middle of the night that had been air dropped by British planes, and smuggled weapons and ammunition in loaded milk cans across town. He witnessed the Germans soldiers committing brutal acts on Jewish people. Food was lean and work was hard during those years. John never forgot them and would share his stories in hope that people would continue to remember how to treat others respectfully, despite differences in religion. After the war, John attended Landbouw School, an agriculture college in Holland. He had an internship that allowed him to travel by bike across Holland and work in the providence of Gelderland. He brought his wife and children back to revisit this region in 2003 as a gift to us. In 1956, with no land to begin his own dairy farm, John immigrated to California. He landed on a train platform in Delano, California with 2 suitcases, $32.00 and not knowing a lick of English. He worked with the Russell family for a year before migrating up to Northern California to work on dairies with other Dutch owners. Quirina Van Warmedam saw this dashing young man and introduced him to a shy young gal named Clazien deGroot. They got married on August 8th, 1959.  Soon afterwards, 7 children came along: Alida, Johannes III, Rosemary, Cornelius, Roy, Steven and Paul. John finally achieved his dream and purchased a 160-acre ranch in Linden, California in 1969. He moved his family from Manteca and has lived there ever since. After selling the dairy, he thought of growing apples.  “All you have to do is plant a tree, grow the apples and sell them!” he said.  Little did he realize this new endeavor would take him to new adventures.  John and Clazien continue to sell their organic fruit at farmer’s markets and stores around Northern California. He leaves behind his lovely wife of 55 years, Clazien, his children and their families, his sisters and brothers in Canada and Holland and many friends. Mass of the Christian burial will be held on Monday, April 13th at 10:00 a.m. We will celebrate his life at Saint Joachim’s Church, burial at Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery and then at the Smit Ranch in Linden, California.  If you wish to send flowers, please send them to Saint Joachim Catholic Church, 13392 Lockeford Ranch Drive, Lockeford, CA.

Wallace Masaki Sakata

Wallace Masaki Sakata, otherwise known as Wally, was born to Seichi Sakata and Kiyoko Sato-Sakata in his home in Haiku, Maui on June 1, 1937. Wallace was the fourth of five children. Nancy Sakata-Yamanaka was the firstborn. The second was Alice Sakata-Nagata and the third was Patsy Sakata-Mori. The fifth was Stanley “boy” Sakata.

Wally’s childhood was challenged by the death of his mother when he was 10 years old. His oldest sister, Nancy, became the caregiver of the family at the tender age of 16. Nancy and Stanley boy are the surviving siblings. Nancy lives in Lodi, CA and Stanley boy resides in Denver, CO.

Wally grew up in Maui until he moved to Kona, Hawaii to help his father tend the coffee farm. While in Kona, Wally attended and graduated from Konawaenah High School Class of 1955. His pastimes, while attending high school, were track, playing football, spear fishing and wild boar hunting.

In order to further his education, Wally moved to Lodi California in 1960 to live with his sister Patsy and her husband Kenneth Mori. During that time, Wally saw it prudent to obtain a job for the City of Lodi to help his father retire some debt. For increased job stability, Wally moved to San Francisco with his brother, Stanley boy, and obtained a job with Caltrans.

During his time in San Francisco he met his bride, JoAnn Miyamoto. They were married on May 7, 1967. Shortly thereafter, they were blessed by the birth of their first son, Derek, on October 13, 1969. In order to find a more hospitable environment to raise a family, Wallace, JoAnn and Derek moved back to Lodi in 1970 to be near their relatives, the Moris and Yamanakas. Shortly after their move, Wallace and JoAnn were blessed with the birth of their second son, Ross, on March 29, 1972.

In order to find a religion in which to raise their new family, Wally and JoAnn were baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The church remained important to them throughout their lives. Through their membership they were blessed with many lifelong friendships that extended to their children who attended the Lodi Seventh-Day Adventist School System.

Wally transferred from Cal Trans to the Employment Development Department in the State of California. There he delved into the then “new world” of computer programming. Wally worked for the State of California for 37 years without using a sick day, which then allowed his earlier retirement at the age of 64 years.

During Wally’s time of employment, he and JoAnn enjoyed seeing the marriage of their two sons. Derek was married to Cindy Sumarauw in 1997 and Ross was married to Krista Carver in 1999. After his retirement, he enjoyed his two grandchildren born to Ross and Krista. Mia was born in 2003 and Lily was born in 2004.

Wally retired well due to his excellent planning, in addition to enjoying his grand daughters; he travelled to the Caribbean on a cruise with JoAnn and then to Japan and Italy with Derek and Cindy. His enjoyment was cut short when his then wife of 40 years passed away at the age of 61 in 2008. Wally bravely continued forward despite the loss of his longtime companion. After her death, he travelled with Derek and Cindy to Indonesia, the Netherlands and France. He subsequently then took his whole family to Maui and China.

After the death of his spouse, Wally was blessed by the birth of his first grandson, Simon in 2011. Wally was very proud of his first grandson who would carry on the “Sakata” name. He was then further blessed by the birth of a second grandson, Abram in 2013. Papa really loved all of his grandchildren. He enjoyed buying them lots of gifts and traveling to Lake Tahoe with them every year.

During the last years of his life, Wally was faced with the challenge associated with his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Wally faced his aggressor with courage and resolve. With the help and dedication of Ross, Krista, Mia and Lily; he lived with dignity and comfort until he passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 9, 2015.

Wally is survived by his sons, Derek and Ross and their wives Cindy and Krista. Derek and Cindy have two sons, Simon and Abram. Ross and Krista have two daughters, Mia and Lily.

Norman found employment at Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. He served for two years in various stateside locations and attained the rank of Corporal. In September of 1952, their daughter, Edwina, was born. Two years later in September of 1954, Deborah and Norman were blessed with twin sons that they named DelRay and DeShay.

After his Army duty, he returned to Stockton where he was employed as a psychiatric technician at Stockton State Hospital. The hospital eventually sent him to San Joaquin Delta College to pursue a degree in nursing. Upon completing his nursing degree, he returned to Stockton State Hospital to work as a psychiatric nurse, a position that the held for thirty years. He also worked as a psychiatric nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital Crisis Center for many years.

Even though Norman led a busy work schedule, he was faithful in his church duties. He held many church offices including Sabbath School superintendent and teacher, elder, and board member. He was also the church treasurer for many years. He was instrumental in starting and supporting the Worthy Students’ Fund, a fund that made it possible for many of the children of the church to obtain a Christian education. He also served as a school board member and chairman. He was the chairman of the building committee for the structure at 2929 S. “B” Street. He worked tirelessly in coordinating with the contractor, fund raising, and even doing some of the physical work involved. He gave liberally and sacrificially toward the building and to other church projects. He loved his church.

Norman was a family man who enjoyed being with his wife and children.  In most activities, Norman and Deborah were always together.  He and Deborah sacrificed to give their children a Christian education.  Following high school graduation, Edwina attended and graduated from La Sierra University.  The twins both went into the military.

Norman enjoyed many hobbies including photography, recording sermons, carpentry, and traveling.  In 1970, he traveled to the World Youth Congress in Switzerland with his daughter, Edwina.  Sometimes the family made trips east to visit other family members.  He especially enjoyed the times spent with his extended family members.  He also enjoyed studying the Bible with others where he was able to share the many truths that he had learned.

During the years of his life he was saddened with the loss of those closest to him.  In 1995, he had to deal with the death of Ted Liben, a young man from Ethiopia that he was sponsoring.  In 2000, was to suffer the loss of his son, DelRay to cancer.  When his wife, Deborah became ill with terminal cancer, he was her faithful bedside caregiver.  She lost that battle in 2009 and Norman lost his bride of fifty-eight years of marriage.

In recent years Norman’s health began to decline. His daughter, Edwina, was his faithful and constant caregiver. His life ended on March 8, 2015, at the age of eighty-four. He awaits the call of his Savior when he will be resurrected to a glorified body to live eternally.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Edwina, son, DeShay, sisters, Coleta Small (George), Ruth Abner, Ida McGill (Nathaniel, Sr.), brother, Gerald Byrd, a host of in-laws, four grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charles Byrd, Curtis Byrd, Jr., Martin Byrd, Hollis Byrd, and Barbara Byrd.
