Wallace Masaki Sakata

Wallace Masaki Sakata, otherwise known as Wally, was born to Seichi Sakata and Kiyoko Sato-Sakata in his home in Haiku, Maui on June 1, 1937. Wallace was the fourth of five children. Nancy Sakata-Yamanaka was the firstborn. The second was Alice Sakata-Nagata and the third was Patsy Sakata-Mori. The fifth was Stanley “boy” Sakata.

Wally’s childhood was challenged by the death of his mother when he was 10 years old. His oldest sister, Nancy, became the caregiver of the family at the tender age of 16. Nancy and Stanley boy are the surviving siblings. Nancy lives in Lodi, CA and Stanley boy resides in Denver, CO.

Wally grew up in Maui until he moved to Kona, Hawaii to help his father tend the coffee farm. While in Kona, Wally attended and graduated from Konawaenah High School Class of 1955. His pastimes, while attending high school, were track, playing football, spear fishing and wild boar hunting.

In order to further his education, Wally moved to Lodi California in 1960 to live with his sister Patsy and her husband Kenneth Mori. During that time, Wally saw it prudent to obtain a job for the City of Lodi to help his father retire some debt. For increased job stability, Wally moved to San Francisco with his brother, Stanley boy, and obtained a job with Caltrans.

During his time in San Francisco he met his bride, JoAnn Miyamoto. They were married on May 7, 1967. Shortly thereafter, they were blessed by the birth of their first son, Derek, on October 13, 1969. In order to find a more hospitable environment to raise a family, Wallace, JoAnn and Derek moved back to Lodi in 1970 to be near their relatives, the Moris and Yamanakas. Shortly after their move, Wallace and JoAnn were blessed with the birth of their second son, Ross, on March 29, 1972.

In order to find a religion in which to raise their new family, Wally and JoAnn were baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The church remained important to them throughout their lives. Through their membership they were blessed with many lifelong friendships that extended to their children who attended the Lodi Seventh-Day Adventist School System.

Wally transferred from Cal Trans to the Employment Development Department in the State of California. There he delved into the then “new world” of computer programming. Wally worked for the State of California for 37 years without using a sick day, which then allowed his earlier retirement at the age of 64 years.

During Wally’s time of employment, he and JoAnn enjoyed seeing the marriage of their two sons. Derek was married to Cindy Sumarauw in 1997 and Ross was married to Krista Carver in 1999. After his retirement, he enjoyed his two grandchildren born to Ross and Krista. Mia was born in 2003 and Lily was born in 2004.

Wally retired well due to his excellent planning, in addition to enjoying his grand daughters; he travelled to the Caribbean on a cruise with JoAnn and then to Japan and Italy with Derek and Cindy. His enjoyment was cut short when his then wife of 40 years passed away at the age of 61 in 2008. Wally bravely continued forward despite the loss of his longtime companion. After her death, he travelled with Derek and Cindy to Indonesia, the Netherlands and France. He subsequently then took his whole family to Maui and China.

After the death of his spouse, Wally was blessed by the birth of his first grandson, Simon in 2011. Wally was very proud of his first grandson who would carry on the “Sakata” name. He was then further blessed by the birth of a second grandson, Abram in 2013. Papa really loved all of his grandchildren. He enjoyed buying them lots of gifts and traveling to Lake Tahoe with them every year.

During the last years of his life, Wally was faced with the challenge associated with his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Wally faced his aggressor with courage and resolve. With the help and dedication of Ross, Krista, Mia and Lily; he lived with dignity and comfort until he passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 9, 2015.

Wally is survived by his sons, Derek and Ross and their wives Cindy and Krista. Derek and Cindy have two sons, Simon and Abram. Ross and Krista have two daughters, Mia and Lily.

Norman English Byrd

Norman English ByrdNorman English Byrd was born Dec. 28, 1930 in Sedalia, Missouri, the fifth child of Curtis Foster Byrd and Virginia Josephine English-Byrd. His was a large family. He attended elementary school and high school at Hubbard High School. After his high school graduation, he migrated to California where an older brother, Charles, was already living. With Charles’ support and assistance he was able to survive the move.

Norman’s move to Oakland, Calif. was to lead to many momentous events in his life. In 1948, he was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church by Pastor R.W. Nelson, pastor of the Market Street Seventh-day Adventist Church. Although in his teens at the time, he was a committed Christian and became a serious student of the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, a practice that he continued throughout his life. He formed a close friendship with Luther Williams, another conscientious Christian teenager, who was baptized a year after Norman.

It was at the Market Street Church that he met Deborah Elizabeth Ann Saxton Young, and a romance started that eventually led to a lovely wedding and marriage in 1951. He became part of the Young and McCoy families with the marriage, and he moved to Stockton, California where they had settled. Norman joined with others in the building of the Market & “E” Seventh-day Adventist Church. He became an active and involved church member.

Norman found employment at Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. He served for two years in various stateside locations and attained the rank of Corporal. In September of 1952, their daughter, Edwina, was born. Two years later in September of 1954, Deborah and Norman were blessed with twin sons that they named DelRay and DeShay.

After his Army duty, he returned to Stockton where he was employed as a psychiatric technician at Stockton State Hospital. The hospital eventually sent him to San Joaquin Delta College to pursue a degree in nursing. Upon completing his nursing degree, he returned to Stockton State Hospital to work as a psychiatric nurse, a position that the held for thirty years. He also worked as a psychiatric nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital Crisis Center for many years.

Even though Norman led a busy work schedule, he was faithful in his church duties. He held many church offices including Sabbath School superintendent and teacher, elder, and board member. He was also the church treasurer for many years. He was instrumental in starting and supporting the Worthy Students’ Fund, a fund that made it possible for many of the children of the church to obtain a Christian education. He also served as a school board member and chairman. He was the chairman of the building committee for the structure at 2929 S. “B” Street. He worked tirelessly in coordinating with the contractor, fund raising, and even doing some of the physical work involved. He gave liberally and sacrificially toward the building and to other church projects. He loved his church.

Norman was a family man who enjoyed being with his wife and children.  In most activities, Norman and Deborah were always together.  He and Deborah sacrificed to give their children a Christian education.  Following high school graduation, Edwina attended and graduated from La Sierra University.  The twins both went into the military.

Norman enjoyed many hobbies including photography, recording sermons, carpentry, and traveling.  In 1970, he traveled to the World Youth Congress in Switzerland with his daughter, Edwina.  Sometimes the family made trips east to visit other family members.  He especially enjoyed the times spent with his extended family members.  He also enjoyed studying the Bible with others where he was able to share the many truths that he had learned.

During the years of his life he was saddened with the loss of those closest to him.  In 1995, he had to deal with the death of Ted Liben, a young man from Ethiopia that he was sponsoring.  In 2000, was to suffer the loss of his son, DelRay to cancer.  When his wife, Deborah became ill with terminal cancer, he was her faithful bedside caregiver.  She lost that battle in 2009 and Norman lost his bride of fifty-eight years of marriage.

In recent years Norman’s health began to decline. His daughter, Edwina, was his faithful and constant caregiver. His life ended on March 8, 2015, at the age of eighty-four. He awaits the call of his Savior when he will be resurrected to a glorified body to live eternally.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Edwina, son, DeShay, sisters, Coleta Small (George), Ruth Abner, Ida McGill (Nathaniel, Sr.), brother, Gerald Byrd, a host of in-laws, four grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charles Byrd, Curtis Byrd, Jr., Martin Byrd, Hollis Byrd, and Barbara Byrd.

Donald Eugene Gould

Donald Eugene Gould was born July 18, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri and passed away February 20, 2015 at home due to sudden heart failure. He left this world quickly, unexpectedly, and without suffering. His strong belief and faith in God was his strength to all of his family and that was demonstrated by being a pillar and active member of Mayfair Christian Church for the past 50 years. Don’s greatest passion was bowling and despite being 80 years old, he bowled weekly since his early twenties. Don married Rita E. Gould in 1962 and enjoyed 53 years of shared life.

Don came from a meager upbringing where he learned the true value of making a living. He started working at his family owned business, “Gould’s Café” in Texas from ages 13 to 17 years old. He completed the 11th grade and since times were so financially tough, he found a job as manager of a small drive in restaurant from age 18 to 19. Next, he was fortunate to land a better paying job as a driller in the oil fields from ages 20-23 as he also became a father of three little boys, Donny, Danny, and Michael from his first marriage.

God always took Don into a new direction when a better paying opportunity presented itself; he found that in becoming a welder for the next 30 years. During that time, he moved to California, where he met Rita, his soul mate. They were married three months later and their first child and Don’s only daughter, Cathy was born. A few years later, his last born, David came along.

Through the years, Don continued his welding profession until he retired at the age of 53. His next venture was going into business with his son, David who lived with Muscular Dystrophy his entire life. Don’s devotion to David’s well being was displayed by his support in helping David realize his own goals and dreams in starting a print shop from the ground floor. Together, they remained in business until David’s passing 16 months ago and it was 27 years up to Don’s own passing.

Don was a man who was well loved and respected in his church and bowling community and was a man who was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was truly a self made man with his faith in God to lead him every step of the way.

Don left behind his loving wife and life partner, Rita, his children, Danny Gould (Carol), Michael Gould (Aura), and Cathy Gould-Harrison (Richard), his daughter in laws, Shannon Gould, Bridget Gould and Rita Gould. He also leaves 9 grandchildren: Jamie, Brandon, Brittany, Bethany, Marisa, Jonathan, Takashi, Todd, and Jennica as well as 8 great grandchildren: Mina, Tierstyn, Camdyn, Brayden, Samuel, Evan, twins, Mackenzie and Madison.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Wilbur Gould, his three brothers, Wilbur, Charles, and Norman, his oldest son, Donny in 1985, his grandson, Stephen in 2001, and his youngest son, David in 2013.

Please join us in attending a "Celebration of Life" on Saturday, February 28th at 11am at Mayfair Christian Church, 5 West Swain Road, Stockton, California to give Don the honor of being celebrated for his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Defying Muscular Dystrophy at www.defyingmd.com or by mailing to Defying Muscular Dystrophy at 3031 W. March Lane, Ste. 134, Stockton, Ca 95219. After the war, Norma used her benefits under the GI Bill of Rights to earn her business credential and went to work at the Duluth Herald Tribune.

Together they raised a family of four, while moving across five states, including Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, ultimately residing in San Jose, California.  In California, Norma served as church secretary at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Saratoga, was employed by the Cupertino Union School District, and was very active with the Bay Area WAVES of Northern California as a charter member.

Norma and Bill enjoyed travels to visit their numerous friends across the country, celebrated 25 years together in Hawaii, and traveled throughout Europe, rekindling connections with distant relations in Sweden.  Following the death of Bill on September 5, 1993 due to complications from heart surgery, Norma once again soldiered on and enjoyed the company of her close friends and neighbors in San Jose, California.  In later years, Norma moved to Jackson to be closer to her daughter Brenda and son-in-law Chip, and later moved again to Lodi, California.  Norma passed away peacefully on February 15, 2015, surrounded by the love of her family.

Charlene was born in May 1928 in Wray, Colorado, to Todd and Eugenia Weaver.  When she was thirteen, her Mother married Edward Kelly and they traveled to California where Mr. Kelly was in the Army.  They ended up in Grass Valley, where she met her best friend Melba’s brother Garry, who was the love of her life.  While in high school she was a lifetime member of CSF.

After Garry was discharged from the Navy, Garry and Charlene married in June 1946. They had four children. They moved to the Bay Area, then the Sacramento area and, in 1966, to Lodi.  Charlene loved Lodi. Garry and Charlene enjoyed dancing, and were excellent dancers together.  She loved Mariachi music and the Mexican culture. They traveled to Mexico many times, often taking their family, well before Mexico was a tourist destination. They also traveled to Egypt, China, Spain, Italy, England, and all across the U.S. as well.  Following their retirements, Garry and Charlene would go to anyplace warm during the winter  -- usually Desert Hot Springs.  After 47 years of marriage, Garry died with Charlene by his side.

Charlene worked at the Lodi Marshal’s office for 20 years, and made many lasting friends while working there.  She also assisted in Garry’s Bail Bond Business.  She was an active Lodi Police Department Partner for 14 years and enjoyed the friendships and support that the Partners provided.  She received several commendations for work she did with the Partners.

Charlene had a wonderful sense of humor and had many friends with whom she told jokes.  She had boundless energy and enthusiasm and a zest for life.  She never complained and had a wonderful positive attitude.  Charlene was a people person who never met a stranger and made a special effort to remember the names of everyone she met.  She will be sorely missed.

Charlene is survived by her son Jerry (Cathy) Herrmann, of Morada, daughter Laurie (Ron) Tinkey, of Lodi, son Tom (Barbara) Herrmann of Groveland, Florida, and daughter Barbara (Trevor) Thor of Walnut Creek, California, as well as nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
