James Staal

June 01, 1954 - November 17, 2021

Jim Staal passed suddenly into the loving arms of our Lord on November 17, 2021 while at home in Lodi.

Jim was born to Donald and Beatrice Staal in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 1, 1952. His father died while Jim was only 5 years old. Following his dad's passing, the family moved a number of times to be near his brother and family. Jim graduated from Redwood High School in Larkspur, CA and attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Jim came to Lodi in 1989. He married Tara Warner in Lodi on August 27, 1995. They remained soulmates until his passing. After living in Medford, Oregon for a few years, the balance of their marriage was spent in Lodi.

While Jim worked a variety of jobs during his lifetime, the majority of his years he worked as a youth pastor/director, and youth athletic coach. While in Lodi, he was a youth pastor/director at the First United Methodist Church, Grace Presbyterian Church, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Jim coached the boys golf team and girls golf team at Lodi High School. He also coached the girls basketball teams at Lodi High School, Bear Creek High School, Franklin High School, and Linden High School. He had many championship teams.

Jim was an avid golfer and played up to the time of his passing. He was an all-around sports enthusiast. For most of his life he played a variety of sports, until recent years when his knees got the better of him.
Jim loved music of all genres, but especially rock music and Christian music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, using it extensively in his Christian ministry and youth work. He and Tara attended many concerts, but their favorite group was U2.

Most of all, Jim loved Tara. He had a kind and loving heart. It was as long and wide as the many golf courses he loved to play. He was also compassionate towards others.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Taylor Wahl and her husband Zach. He loved his daughter dearly and took pride in watching her grow both personally and professionally. She is a Physician's Assistant in San Louis Obispo. Jim was so looking forward to meeting his first grandchild, due early next year, when Taylor is expecting her first child, a daughter.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bob. He is survived by his wife, Tara; his daughter, Taylor and her husband Zach; his sister, Donna Coulson and her husband Chuck; his brother's wife, Karen; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kathy and Dave Warner; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jason and Cari Warner; and many nieces and nephews.

Although his passing was unexpected, we take comfort knowing that Jim is now in the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus. No more failing heart. No more aches or pains. No tears. Just the complete love and joy that comes only from being in the presence of the Lord.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lodi. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. The affair will be casual in honor of Jim (he loved to wear shorts and hats). If you have a favorite hat, please feel free to wear it at the reception.

Donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Lodi High Boys Golf Team or the Lodi High Girls Golf Team at 3 S. Pacific Ave, Lodi, CA 95242.

Doris Virginia (Frey) Cavanaugh

December 24, 1921 - November 7, 2021

Doris Virginia (Frey) Cavanaugh entered heaven 54 days before her 100th birthday. She lived a healthy and active life only to leave this earth due to natural causes. Born on Christmas Eve in 1921 at her parents home on East Pine Street in Lodi, she spent the next 99 years as a proud Lodian. Her parents, Fred and Salamena Frey, moved to a farm on Alpine Road outside Lodi while as a young child. This was her reason for such a great work ethic. Doris was a member of the Lodi High Class of 1939. She was proud of playing softball for the Flames. After high school she graduated with a B.S. Degree in nursing from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland. After returning to Lodi she worked as an RN for Drs. Mamie Pallesen and Warren Plowman collectively for 40 years (retiring in1985). Doris was married in 1949 to Joseph Cavanaugh who worked for PG&E. They enjoyed traveling throughout the world (China, Russia,Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Egypt and others) along with all areas of the United States. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joseph passed away in 1998 after 48 years of marriage. Once Joe was gone she spent more of her time reading (as she was an avid reader), enjoyed playing her piano and maintaining her daily walks up until her passing. Doris was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic church and Daughters of Isabella. She volunteered for years as a Pink Lady at Lodi Memorial Hospital. If you were interested in any historical fact about Lodi she knew who, what, when, where, and why in regards to that question and had evidence to back her up. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; and her siblings, Esther Frey, Leslie Frey (Kathleen), Evelyn Surran (Ralph), Ruby Lehr (Bob), Nadine Gilstrap (Jim), and Laverne Gantner (Bob). She is survived by her brother, Derald Frey (June); son, Paul Cavanaugh (Kathleen); daughter, Clare Woznick (Rod); six grandchildren, Lisa Kunst (Tyson), A’ine Kosko (John), Scott Woznick, Mark Cavanaugh (Jeannine), Laura Woznick, and Maura Cavanaugh; along with 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dan Gormley and Arbor Senior Living for all their kindness over the past 5 years; giving Doris the ability to live independently and the freedom to live her life as she pleased. The last couple days of her life she was supported by Seva Hospice who made the transition from her life on Earth to heaven more peaceful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seva Hospice 5330 Pirrone Road, Suite 303, Salida, CA 95368. At her request, Cherokee Memorial is assisting in a private graveside service. Corwin J. Jones

October 24, 1942 – November 7, 2021

Corwin James Jones, 79, of Stockton, California passed away on November 7, 2021. He was born on October 24, 1942 to Wester and Nora (Setlik) Jones in their farmhouse near Arcadia, Nebraska.  He grew up in and near Loup City, Nebraska, attending Loup City High School and helping his parents with the farm.

Corwin loved woodshop in school, and considered going to trade school to become a cabinetmaker.  But the teachers at his country school saw his academic potential and encouraged his parents to send him to college, a first in his family. Before pursuing a higher education, Corwin served in the U.S. Navy.  He then earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska, where he met his future wife of 54 years, Linda.  Even after leaving Nebraska for a Master’s Fellowship from Hughes Aircraft in California, Corwin remained a diehard Cornhusker fan. Go Big Red!

He used the fellowship to obtain a Master’s in Engineering from UCLA and worked for Hughes Aircraft for 10 years, including while attending USC for his dental degree. Corwin’s affinity for living in an agricultural community drew him to Stockton, California to start his dental practice, and was where he lived for the next 45 years.  He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and served as president of San Joaquin Dental Society.

Although many knew him as their dentist, he was also renowned for many other endeavors.  Corwin was an accomplished woodworker and wood turner, and was extremely proud of having served as President of the Nor-Cal Woodturners and being a longtime member of Johnny’s and Bay Area Woodturners. Corwin was an enthusiastic bridge player, ready to join any foursome for cards at a moment's notice.  He was an avid sports fan throughout his life, and especially enjoyed women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and football at any level.  Corwin enjoyed the outdoors, pheasant hunting, fishing and spending time on the Delta, catching many prized sturgeon and striped bass.  He was known for his competitiveness, tremendous sense of humor, and passion to teach and mentor others in his crafts.

Corwin was extremely proud of his family and was especially pleased that all three of his children hold Master’s degrees.  Most important to him, though, was that they all are outstanding citizens.  He was also so grateful for the special relationship he had with his brother.

Corwin is survived by his wife, Linda (Spiekermann) Jones; his children, Sharon Hughes (Chris) of Fremont, California, Bryan Jones (Shari) of Fallbrook, California, Melinda Decker (Bill Sunick) of Malvern, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Lauren and Jared Hughes, who are both in college; his brother, Cecil Jones (Janet) of Columbus, Nebraska, and many special extended family members.
